We miss racing just as much as you, so we're bringing you Dirt, Sweat & Beers, a run and cleanup series featuring eight events from June through November. From the Bay Area to the Sierra, each event features a 5K/10K open course and a DIY cleanup. Why? Because we want to feel good and do good!
Join REI, Sierra Nevada and Salomon on this adventure, as we take you to some of our most loved local places to enjoy and care for. Run, walk, hike or plog your way through Sanborn County Park, Mount Sutro, Sonoma County Parks, American River Conservancy, Half Moon Bay State Beach, Glen Park Greenway, American River Parkway and Truckee Meadows parks. Each Dirt, Sweat & Beers event will be open for a 60-day period to give you plenty of time to complete the course of your choice and a DIY cleanup on your own schedule.
Explore event locations, dates and registration time frames below. Top time finishers with verified times of each course in three categories: Woman, Man and Open Gender will receive a pair of Salomon shoes, a REI Co-op hip pack, a HydraPak SkyFlask™ 500 ml Flexible Handheld and a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale carabiner beer holder. At the end of the series, one overall winner for each category, who completed the most, verified 5K and/or 10K courses (running the same course multiple times doesn't count for this one!) will receive a Dirt, Sweat & Beers package featuring a Salomon hydration vest, a pair of Salomon shoes, a REI Co-op run outfitting appointment with complementary gear to complete your head-to-toe look, a Sierra Nevada giftcard, a HydraPak SkyFlask™ 500 ml Flexible Handheld and more!
Cheers and we'll see you out on the trails! Participants must be 21+ to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers. Registration is open for all events! #DirtSweatAndBeers
Run and clean up all trails or a select few, the best part is, it's up to you! How? Introducing the "open course" format, a GPS course designed by The Trail Portal that allows you to compete against others at your own time and own pace, during an event time period in compliance with the local park rules. Just like a chip in a race bib, your time can be validated and your name populated onto the leaderboard.
Make the Commitment
Register for each Dirt, Sweat & Beers event to gain access to the event course and make a pledge to complete your DIY cleanup. Each 5K and 10K course requires separate registration. Participants must be 21+ to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers. Registration will be rolled out for each event throughout the year, with the first event launching on June 1, 2021.
Plan your Outing
Run, walk, hike or plog the course on your own schedule within the 60-day event period. You can run the course as many times as you'd like in the 60-day event period to get your best time. Track your results on the RunGo App leaderboard. All attempts will be added to the leaderboard, but only your fastest time will be counted. Before, during or after your run, pick up trash along the trail or surrounding area to care for the lands that let us run free. We also recommend reviewing and printing out the course map to take with you before heading out!
Download the RunGo App
All Dirt, Sweat & Beers courses are powered through the RunGo App and an access link to the course will be sent directly to the email you registered with. Collect Run and Cleanup badges on the RunGo App to let us know all the good work you're doing.
Even though we're virtual, we can still have a little fun! Between REI, Sierra Nevada and Salomon, you can bet there will be some surprises and prizes along the way.

Santa Clara County Park’s six-decade legacy of providing outstanding recreational opportunities in beautiful natural locations has resulted in one of the largest regional park systems in the California. Since the first County parkland was acquired in 1924, the Santa Clara County park system has grown to include 28 regional parks encompassing over 52,000 acres of land. Our dedicated ranger, maintenance and interpretive staff are necessary complements to the overall park experience, taking an active role in the stewardship of the County’s finest natural resources and waterways especially with the assistance from our 1,400 volunteers who selflessly donate more than 60,000 hours of labor each year.
The mission of the Sutro Stewards is to build community, connect people with nature, and protect and enhance Mount Sutro, one of the city’s wildest and most beautiful green spaces. We do this by working with volunteers to develop and maintain multi-use trails while conserving habitat for locally native plants and wildlife. Sutro Stewards work to conserve habitat through ecological restoration and native plant propagation while providing recreational opportunities in the UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve. Mount Sutro Open Space, located in the geographic center of San Francisco, was overlooked by surrounding communities for a century. In the last decade, the true value of the open space was revealed through the Sutro Stewards’ creation of multi-use trails, allowing the public to explore this exceptional place.
Sonoma County Regional Parks includes more than 50 parks and beaches from Petaluma to Gualala and Sonoma to Bodega Bay. Many offer wild landscapes and miles of trails. Others feature sports fields, playgrounds, and campgrounds. Regional Parks also manages the county's largest ocean marina and largest extracurricular environmental education center.
The American River Conservancy serves our communities by ensuring healthy ecosystems within the Upper American and Upper Cosumnes River Watersheds through land conservation, stewardship and education.
As a non-profit community organization in the central Sierra Nevada foothills, we work to preserve natural areas and cultural resources and build an enduring ethic of care, building a sustainable future for humans in harmony with nature. The American River Conservancy protects habitat, native fisheries, scenic vistas, and recreational lands within the upper American River and Cosumnes River watersheds.
California State Parks Foundation is an independent, member-supported nonprofit that mobilizes a diverse network of Californians to be active champions for our state parks. At California State Parks Foundation, we believe that all Californians are essential to sustaining our state parks. Every day, we inform and inspire current and future generations of park champions, enabling them to be the passionate advocates our state parks need. Because when we build a movement of park supporters, we ensure the long-term sustainability of our incredible state park treasures.
The Glen Park Greenway is a magical riparian corridor in San Francisco, supported by the SF Parks Alliance, that runs along the former banks of Islais Creek, connecting Glen Park’s transit hub and urban village to the many recreational opportunities throughout Glen Canyon Park. In 2017 the project began planting trees and shrubs, stabilizing the trail, and sowing acorns to establish a California oak woodland in the heart of Glen Park. The Greenway is a link in a growing system of nature trails in the Bay Area that provide green pathways for exploring the city on foot, as well as corridors of natural habitat that allow wildlife to move between the city’s open spaces.
The Sacramento Valley Conservancy is an accredited land trust with a mission to preserve the beauty, character, and biodiversity of the Sacramento Valley landscape by protecting and stewarding natural and working lands, and scenic open spaces for the benefit of current and future generations.

Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation is a private nonprofit that was incorporated in 2012 and received its 501(c)(3) determination in 2013. The Parks Foundation protects and enhances our communities' livability through public engagement, education, and the sustainability of our parks, open spaces, and trails.
Dirt, Sweat & Beers isn’t a traditional in-person race--we aren’t all gathering at the same starting line at the same time. This event has an "open course" format, which is a GPS course designed by The Trail Portal that allows you to compete against others at your own time and own pace, during a set event time period and in compliance with the local park rules. There are eight (8) Dirt, Sweat & Beers events throughout the region from June to November 2021: 5 in the Bay Area, 2 in the Sacramento area, and 1 in Reno. Each event includes a 5K Course and a 10K Course. So, there are 16 total courses you can run between now and November. And all the while, you’re encouraged to grab your DIY Cleanup Kit and help care for the places that let us run free.

Stewardship puts the “Dirt” in “Dirt, Sweat & Beers!” At REI, we believe that a life outdoors is a life well-lived, and we believe in protecting and caring for outdoor spaces. We suggest cleaning up the running trails, but you can also pick up trash in your neighborhood. Every little bit matters! You aren’t required to clean up, but it’s a great way to give back to the places that let us run free.
REI is committed to creating an inclusive environment that recognizes and welcomes all identities. With that in mind, we allow participants in our events to self-select registration categories based on how they identify, no questions asked. Our expectation is that all participants will help us maintain an environment of support and respect for one another. All categories, Women, Men, and Open Gender are eligible for the same prize packages.
Actually, no! Each course will be at least as long as the distance advertised, and in some cases might be just a little longer. For road races, the organizers can measure out an exact distance like a 5K or a 10K. But for a race like Dirt, Sweat & Beers, which is predominantly on trails, we have to do our best to work with the distances that the trails provide. Each course will indicate on the event page and its actual distance in the RunGo App, so that you know what to expect before heading out.
No, you don’t need to run the courses! You can hike, run, walk, plog or all of the above! We welcome all comfort levels and all paces. In fact, the “Overall 5K/10K Series Champions” for Dirt, Sweat & Beers aren’t based on speed-- they’re based on how many courses that person completed, regardless of pace.
Event gear will start to ship on June 15, 2021. After June 15, we will send out event gear and DIY Cleanup Kits weekly to everyone who recently registered, and packages ship from a NorCal-based facility. So once you register, it shouldn’t be long before you have your awesome race gear and/or cleanup supplies in hand.
