How it Works

Run and clean up all trails or a select few, the best part is, it's up to you! How? Introducing the "open course" format, a GPS course designed by The Trail Portal that allows you to compete against others at your own time and own pace, during an event time period in compliance with the local park rules. Just like a chip in a race bib, your time can be validated and your name populated onto the leaderboard.

Make the Commitment

Register for each Dirt, Sweat & Beers event to gain access to the event course and make a pledge to complete your DIY cleanup. Each 5K and 10K course requires separate registration. Participants must be 21+ to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers. Registration will be rolled out for each event throughout the year, with the first event launching on June 1, 2021.

Plan your Outing

Run, walk, hike or plog the course on your own schedule within the 60-day event period. You can run the course as many times as you'd like in the 60-day event period to get your best time. Track your results on the RunGo App leaderboard. All attempts will be added to the leaderboard, but only your fastest time will be counted. Before, during or after your run, pick up trash along the trail or surrounding area to care for the lands that let us run free. We also recommend reviewing and printing out the course map to take with you before heading out!

Download the RunGo App
All Dirt, Sweat & Beers courses are powered through the RunGo App and an access link to the course will be sent directly to the email you registered with. Collect Run and Cleanup badges on the RunGo App to let us know all the good work you're doing.

Event Hosts

Santa Clara County Parks

Dirt, Sweat & Beers Event 1: Sanborn County Park

June - July

Santa Clara County Park’s six-decade legacy of providing outstanding recreational opportunities in beautiful natural locations has resulted in one of the largest regional park systems in the California. Since the first County parkland was acquired in 1924, the Santa Clara County park system has grown to include 28 regional parks encompassing over 52,000 acres of land. Our dedicated ranger, maintenance and interpretive staff are necessary complements to the overall park experience, taking an active role in the stewardship of the County’s finest natural resources and waterways especially with the assistance from our 1,400 volunteers who selflessly donate more than 60,000 hours of labor each year.

Sutro Stewards

Dirt, Sweat & Beers Event 2: Mount Sutro

July - August

The mission of the Sutro Stewards is to build community, connect people with nature, and protect and enhance Mount Sutro, one of the city’s wildest and most beautiful green spaces. We do this by working with volunteers to develop and maintain multi-use trails while conserving habitat for locally native plants and wildlife. Sutro Stewards work to conserve habitat through ecological restoration and native plant propagation while providing recreational opportunities in the UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve. Mount Sutro Open Space, located in the geographic center of San Francisco, was overlooked by surrounding communities for a century. In the last decade, the true value of the open space was revealed through the Sutro Stewards’ creation of multi-use trails, allowing the public to explore this exceptional place.

Dirt, Sweat & Beers Event 6: Glen Park Greenway

October - November

The Glen Park Greenway is a magical riparian corridor in San Francisco, supported by the SF Parks Alliance, that runs along the former banks of Islais Creek, connecting Glen Park’s transit hub and urban village to the many recreational opportunities throughout Glen Canyon Park. In 2017 the project began planting trees and shrubs, stabilizing the trail, and sowing acorns to establish a California oak woodland in the heart of Glen Park. The Greenway is a link in a growing system of nature trails in the Bay Area that provide green pathways for exploring the city on foot, as well as corridors of natural habitat that allow wildlife to move between the city’s open spaces.

#RecreateResponsibily

1. Know before you go & stay safe –Research local guidelines and follow social-distance protocols

· Always wear cleanup gloves with the nitrile (plastic) side on your palm.

· Look before you grab trash—pay attention to any sharp or unknown objects.

· Place sharp objects like glass shards in a solid container, like a glass jar, and   dispose of them safely.

· If you come across hazardous materials like needles, check with your local hospital, municipality or county to find the best way to properly dispose of them.

· It’s never a bad idea to have a small first-aid kit on hand.

2. Grab your DIY Cleanup Kit & get outside

· Your kit will have all the basics you need! Gloves, trash bags, a face covering and a few extra bonus items.

· Don’t forget a reusable water bottle and snacks so you can stay hydrated and properly fueled.

3. Pick up trash & dispose of it properly

FAQ

How does the Dirt, Sweat & Beers event series work?

Dirt, Sweat & Beers isn’t a traditional in-person race--we aren’t all gathering at the same starting line at the same time. This event has an "open course" format, which is a GPS course designed by The Trail Portal that allows you to compete against others at your own time and own pace, during a set event time period and in compliance with the local park rules. There are eight (8) Dirt, Sweat & Beers events throughout the region from June to November 2021: 5 in the Bay Area, 2 in the Sacramento area, and 1 in Reno. Each event includes a 5K Course and a 10K Course. So, there are 16 total courses you can run between now and November. And all the while, you’re encouraged to grab your DIY Cleanup Kit and help care for the places that let us run free.

How much does it cost to run a Dirt, Sweat & Beers course?

Feel Good + Do Good + Look Good Kit: $50 - The full race experience!

Feel Good + Do Good Kit (Course + DIY Cleanup): $30 - Perfect for returning runners who don't need all the swag, but still want to complete a DIY cleanup before, during or after your run.

Feel Good Kit (Course Only): $25 - Perfect for returning runners who already have their race swag and DIY cleanup supplies and just want to log those miles!

Why is there a DIY Cleanup involved in this event? Am I required to clean up?

Stewardship puts the “Dirt” in “Dirt, Sweat & Beers!” At REI, we believe that a life outdoors is a life well-lived, and we believe in protecting and caring for outdoor spaces. We suggest cleaning up the running trails, but you can also pick up trash in your neighborhood. Every little bit matters! You aren’t required to clean up, but it’s a great way to give back to the places that let us run free.

Why is there an Open Gender category?

REI is committed to creating an inclusive environment that recognizes and welcomes all identities. With that in mind, we allow participants in our events to self-select registration categories based on how they identify, no questions asked. Our expectation is that all participants will help us maintain an environment of support and respect for one another. All categories, Women, Men, and Open Gender are eligible for the same prize packages.

Is there a minimum age requirement for this race?

Because this event series is a celebration of both running AND beer (...and dirt and sweat!), you must be 21+ to participate in the event.

Does it matter when I complete each course?

No - that’s the great thing about the “open course” model! You can complete the course any time within the 60 day period that the event is active. Just make sure to be aware of park hours at the event location and make sure you’re following all local rules and guidelines.

Should I expect the Dirt, Sweat & Beers courses to be on roads or on trails?

A little of both, but predominantly trails. Some courses will be a hybrid of trails and roads, others will exclusively be trails. But remember, if you don't consider yourself a trail runner, you don't need to run the course. You can walk or hike each course - whatever feels best for you.

Is the 5K course exactly a 5K? Is the 10K course exactly a 10K?

Actually, no! Each course will be at least as long as the distance advertised, and in some cases might be just a little longer. For road races, the organizers can measure out an exact distance like a 5K or a 10K. But for a race like Dirt, Sweat & Beers, which is predominantly on trails, we have to do our best to work with the distances that the trails provide. Each course will indicate on the event page and its actual distance in the RunGo App, so that you know what to expect before heading out.

I want to complete the 5K and the 10K. Do I need to register separately for both and pay the registration fee for both?

Yes. Each course requires its own entry and registration fee. We recommend you register for the Feel Good + Do Good + Look Good kit for one course, and then choose the Feel Good (Course Only) option for the other course.

Can I run another 5K or 10K course in my neighborhood, or do I have to complete the official course?

You need to complete the official course.

My plans have changed, is it possible to get a refund, transfer my registration to another runner, or transfer myself to a different course?

Refunds and transfers are not permitted for this event. Thank you for understanding!

I am not a runner, but love this event. Do I need to RUN the courses?

No, you don’t need to run the courses! You can hike, run, walk, plog or all of the above! We welcome all comfort levels and all paces. In fact, the “Overall 5K/10K Series Champions” for Dirt, Sweat & Beers aren’t based on speed-- they’re based on how many courses that person completed, regardless of pace.

Can I complete the course with my dog?

It depends! Different recreation areas have different rules when it comes to your four-legged friends. Please check on specific rules at the race location before showing up with your pup.

When will my event gear ship?

Event gear will start to ship on June 15, 2021. After June 15, we will send out event gear and DIY Cleanup Kits weekly to everyone who recently registered, and packages ship from a NorCal-based facility. So once you register, it shouldn’t be long before you have your awesome race gear and/or cleanup supplies in hand.

Do I have to wait for my event kit to arrive before I complete the course?

No! You can complete the course any time after you register and before the 60-day event period closes. If your event kit hasn’t arrived by the time you run the course, no worries. You’ll just get to enjoy the gear later on, after you’re already an official Dirt, Sweat & Beers finisher!

What if there’s no parking when I get to the course?

Do some research ahead of time and identify some alternative parking options in case parking is not available upon your arrival. Please follow all local parking laws and regulations, never park in areas not designated for parking, and never block roadways or entrances. Know before you go.

How can I win prizes as a Dirt Sweat and Beers participant -- and what can I win?

There are three great ways to win Dirt, Sweat & Beers prizes. For Dirt, Sweat & Beers official rules, visit here.

--5K/10K Top Finishers: Participants with the fastest verifiable race route time for each course and in each category (Man, Woman, Open) will win a pair of Salomon shoes, an REI hip pack, a HydraPak SkyFlask™ 500 ml Flexible Handheld and a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale carabiner beer holder!
--Overall 5K/10K Series Champions: Participants who completed the highest number of different Dirt, Sweat & Beers courses will win a voucher for a pair of Salomon shoes, a Salomon hydration vest, a REI Co-op run outfitting appointment with complementary gear to complete your head-to-toe look (up to $249), a $100 gift card to Sierra Nevada’s Chico Taproom and a HydraPak SkyFlask™ 500 ml Flexible Handheld!
--Surprises for taking part in the DIY Cleanup: While there is no official award for this category, there could be some surprises along the way to celebrate all the great work being done in our community!

How are 5K/10K Top Finishers determined?

The person with the fastest verifiable race route time on each course (5K Course and 10K Course) from each category (Man, Woman, Open) is that course’s Top Finisher! Manual time submissions are not eligible for Top Finisher prizes. For Dirt, Sweat & Beers official rules, visit here.

How are the Overall 5K/10K Series Champions determined?

We will award the runner from each category who completes the highest number of different Dirt, Sweat & Beers courses. Repeating the same 5K or 10K course multiple times does not count towards this award. In the event of a tie within a given category, a random drawing from among the top participants will determine the winner. Manual submissions are not eligible for Overall 5K/10K Series Champion prizes. For Dirt, Sweat & Beers official rules, visit here.

Will participants be awarded for completing a DIY Cleanup?

When you upload your race results, you will also see the option to log your cleanup and enter your most interesting piece of trash collected. While there is no official award for this category, there could be some surprises along the way to celebrate all the great work being done in our community.

Do I need to use RunGo to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers?

Yes, you will need to use RunGo to participate in Dirt, Sweat & Beers, since that is where the courses are hosted and that is where results will be uploaded. The RunGo app can be downloaded to all smartphones, and you can also access everything you need in a browser. We recommend using the app for the full DSB experience. Check out all of our RunGo FAQs here.

How do I use the RunGo app?

You can find RunGo’s step-by-step guide of How to Run an Open Course race, including instructions on how to use the app, here. If you have more questions after reading that guide, check out all of our RunGo FAQs here.

How/where do I get the RunGo app?

The RunGo app is free. Click the following links to download the RunGo app for iPhone, Android, or Apple Watch. Tip: For the best mobile experience with the RunGo app, make sure that your smartphone’s operating system is up to date and that you are using the most up-to-date version of the RunGo app. For even more RunGo info, check out all of our RunGo FAQs here.

How do I receive the courses?

When you register for Dirt, Sweat, & Beers, you’ll receive an email confirmation with the course link. The email will go to the email you registered with. If you didn’t receive the email in your inbox, please check your junk and spam folders, or the promotions tab if you use a Gmail account. If that doesn’t work, please email dsb@rei.com.

I registered for the event after it started. Is this ok?

Absolutely! The event period is 60 days. You can register and complete your course at any time within the 60-day window.

Are the courses wheelchair accessible?

Courses may not be wheelchair accessible due to the natural terrain of the course trails.

Once I’ve registered, how many times can I complete the same course?

Once you’ve registered for a course, you can complete it as many times as you would like within the 60 day period that the course is active. The RunGo app will automatically place your best time on the leaderboard.

Does Dirt, Sweat & Beers have a hashtag?
